In 1994 we opened the restaurant 12 Apostel in Berlin-Charlottenburg with the first wood fired pizza oven in Berlin, and two years later we opened our second restaurant in Berlin-Mitte.
Stone oven pizza prepared in such an oven was a widely unknown taste experience at that time in Germany: the thin crust pizza, twirled by hand, topped with top-quality ingredients and baked right beside an open beech wood fire – directly in the restaurant for our guests to see.
The idea was born during a journey through Italy and many of the impressions found their way into the interior of our Berlin restaurants and the menu.
Our name 12 Apostel, for example, reminds us of an evening in the north Italian town of Verona,where the restaurant „I dodici Apostoli“ is situated in an old palazzo– whereas there is no pizza available…
The name „I dodici Apostoli” has no direct biblical background in that connection: In the second half of the 18th century 12 merchants met regularly in the old inn to seal their deals over a simple meal and a glass of Valpolicella. The people of Verona jokingly referred to them as „the twelve apostles“…
